May 31: Aiming to control covid spread in the nation, Japan recently announced the extension of the quarantine period from 6 to 10 days for travellers who have been to India and 5 other South Asian countries in the most recent times. This decision was taken amid a surge in the covid cases and rising concerns triggered due to that.

According to the reports, this development will have a huge affect on Japanese citizens primarily given that the government has banned the entry of foreign nationals including the ones who have resident status along with those who have been to those countries within the last two weeks; except under special circumstances.

The Japanese government also states that every traveller who has been to India, the Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal will now have to undergo a 10-days quarantine in place of the 6-days one, as per the previous order.

As per the reports, the government ‘might’ also impose a 3-day quarantine for the people who have been to Tunisia and Kazakhstan in recent times. This would also include a coronavirus test on the final day.

Referring to the recent orders, the Chief Secretary of Japan Katsunobu Kato said that there is a strong unease feeling among the Japanese people in terms of coronavirus and its deadly variants. This remains the top reason why the country took the decision of tightening the rules of border controls.

Countries like Canada, UAE among others have already extended travel restrictions with India as the country is facing a sharp and unstoppable surge in the Covid cases all across the nation.
