15 Percent Pledge, is an initiative in order to increase representation of Black-owned brands in stores of Macy’s Inc across the country, for this the chains follow the retailers like West Elm and Sephora signing into the pledge. Under the plan, Macy’s stated that they will dedicate 15% of there purchasing power across every product category to businesses owned by Black.

After Macy’s made its announcement earlier on Monday, InStyle US also claimed that they would dedicate 15% of its magazine coverage to Black-owned brands. Also, they said that they would increase diversity in the celebrities and models featured in its pages. The pledges were launched to address the systemic racism following the police killing of George Floyd in May and subsequently occurred protests.

The 15 Percent Pledge refers to the percentage of Black people’s population in the US. 9 companies in the US and Canada has joined the pledge so far. Aurora James, founder of the 15 Percent Pledge, in a statement mentioned, “Now more than ever, we need to demand that retailers and other companies offer more than lip service to Black communities”.
